Online social video games have become quite a craze in recent years. And there’s good reason for this. Social games tend to be easy and fun to play, available from any location, free (or extremely cheap), and are heavily community oriented. This causes a variety of incentives and rewards for time invested. But what many are talking and wondering about pertains to a specific niche within the social online craze. And that, specifically, is why farming games? Taken in at a glance, a video game based around the culture of farming is counter intuitive. Typically anyone with any interest in farming wouldn’t have much to do with video games. Those interested in farming tend not to have an overly great deal to do with the internet. Well, although you’d think farming enthusiasts/practitioners would be the target of online social farming games, in fact, they are not. The real targets are family oriented casual social media users.

Originally, the whole concept that drove video games linked to social media sites like Facebook was to try and spur more social media interaction by creating simple and fun to play games. Farming games like Farmville, as they were designed, managed to have a huge impact into the market of the casual user of both social media and online gaming. Farming games do a beautiful job tailoring their game to casual players. By making the game simple, they insured that casual gamers could understand the game quickly and be immediately engaged. This helped ease the way for many casual gamers and social media users into Farming games.

Offering ever increasing results and rewards helped keep users engaged and active. Because there was always a next step, it kept users hooked and plugged in, with continually satisfying results.

Social interaction and competition

By converting the game with online social media they made the game extremely visible. Friends could view each other’s results, help each other out, and play together. It also helped turn the game into a friendly competition, giving users the added incentive to stay active and engaged.

Built in marketing

Because you could see your friends’ results and the fact that they were active and engaged in online social farm games, the game naturally marketed itself. Even people who had no natural desire or inclination to play a farm game (or much of any video game, for that matter), would feel curiosity and social pressure to at least give it a try. And the more who fell to either social pressure or simple curiosity, the more the game was marketed. Simply said, it was brilliant.

This should not be overlooked as a contributing factor. At the end of the day, most people found online farm games to be fun. For whatever the reason they started playing it, they enjoyed it, for at least a time. These factors helped contribute to social farming games success, and explain at least some of the attraction. No matter what the reason, there can be no doubt the impact social games, including farm games, have had on society as a whole. It introduced masses of casual technology users to the video gaming world, and helped increased the popularity of social platforms and games.
